Fruit of the oak

smooth oval nut in a rough cuplike base

when we were girls in autumn

from the forest floor

we gathered the fallen

removed their caps

our palms rolled

and rubbed them

over and over

our cotton sleeves

polishing to hide

our secret store

in the bony laps

of rooted trees
