One September day when I was twelve and sky was pouring rain on our bare heads

I walked without my raincoat blocks and blocks of downtown Newport, Maine, with a boy

I was the new girl in his neighborhood, free wandering washed streets, unwatched

He wanted to be my boyfriend, so it was a first date, and not a promising one

since I was heated by a strep throat and feverishly curious about making choice

any fledgling experiment of risk creating consequence

felt intoxicating, skin clean drenched under careless sky
