I'm pleased to be presenting a weeklong workshop for my 5th summer at the 40th Annual IWWG Summer Conference at Muhlenberg College, Allentown, PA, July 7-14, 2017
Writing & Producing Your 10-Minute Play or Monologue
Have you always wanted to write for the stage, but didn’t know how to begin? Over the past decade, short play festivals have become a regular feature of theatre companies, offering both novice and experienced playwrights the opportunity to see their writing performed. Participants will develop in class (or bring to class) a working draft of either (1) a ten-minute play, or (2) a short monologue or excerpt from a one-woman show. Through in-class writing, discussion, script reading, and revision, we will explore theatrical structure, setup, dialogue, plot, character development, subtext, theme, theatricality, and elements of production. We’ll discuss successful ten-minute plays and monologues, applying tools for avoiding common pitfalls. This workshop culminates in a developmental staged reading on Wednesday evening (open to all conference attendees), where actors will read your play on stage so you can hear your script and respond to feedback. The final session focuses on revision and submitting to play festivals for production. No prior playwriting experience is required.
