. . . The waves beside them danced; but they

Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:

A poet could not but be gay,

In such a jocund company:

I gazed—and gazed—but little thought

What wealth the show to me had brought. . .

Frank came into the room last night and asked my daughter and I if we wanted to have a sunrise hike for Easter morning. Hmmm, how early? my daughter asked? Well, we got up at 4:30 a.m. and were headed to Newport, Rhode Island, to our favorite Cliffwalk, by 5:00 a.m.. The sun came up just before we parked the car. Suzi and Charlie came this time, very happily. Very few people out. The water was calm and still, there was no wind, and we walked along the trail and all the daffodils, hundreds of them, bloomed along the way. A bright sun morning, and the dogs had a romp on a sandy beach and a swim. Frank through the stick for Charlie who didn’t mind the cold. It was the best Easter hike ever. We were home by 11:00 a.m. and I had plenty of time for yard work: no Easter dinner this year, just a sunny, cheerful day outdoors. Got so much raking and branch trimming done, I felt very satisfied. In the late afternoon, another social occasion: a friend’s 60th birthday hello in the yard with a few couples; masks, social distancing, but a wonderful feeling of breaking the spell of the pandemic, inch by inch. Tonight, my body is saying: sleep, rest easy.
