#NewThisDay Writing From My Photo Stream
“We plant seeds in the ground
And dreams in the sky,
Hoping that, someday, the roots of one
Will meet the upstretched limbs of the other.
It has not happened yet.
We share the sky, all of us, the whole world:
Together, we are a tribe of eyes that look upward,
Even as we stand on uncertain ground. . .
~ Alberto Rios, excerpt from “We are of a Tribe”
Morning Meadow
We are both awake early, eager to talk. Frank was actually away from the house for a whole day (!) so there’s a lot to catch up on. The longest we’ve been away from each other in many months. It’s fun to have a little distance, and then to have separate days to talk about from scratch. Then, out the door, and a long walk. I talk to a dear friend, far away, who needs me to listen. I understand. I have been the person who needs to be listened to. I imagine we are meeting in a wide open meadow where we can be loud and wild and ferocious. I am, actually, crossing the meadow, it’s rust and gold today. And, after I listen, I am following Charlie and Suzi down the footpath where only a few of us travel. And I go a little off the trail to be next to the music of the gushing brook. It’s a kind of musical silence, I guess. I return home, refreshed, and work for a while on the Ardeche poem, going as far as I can for today. And then I prepare prompts for my two Aim for Astonishing Webinars; one afternoon, one evening. A busy day, and worthwhile.
Tonight, we are saying goodbye. We’ve been together in this cohort for six months, once a month, and everyone has grown close in the deep sharing, taking risks with their writing. It’s hard to say goodbye. Except the takeaways that are shared help me see how valuable this workshop has been. I climb the stairs for bed, happily tired and filled up. I am reading a biography: A Life of Georgia O’Keeffe, by Roxana Robinson, an expanded edition! A wonderful, thick book that keeps me reading too late into the night. As I hope it will tonight, as I close this day.
