#NewThisDay Writing From My Photo Stream

First Ice

Praise
flow and change, night and
the pulse of day.

~ Denise Levertov

First thing I laid eyes on, this morning, the red maple leaves, still on the branches, outlined in frost. Ah, tonight we turn back the clocks! And there is a bit of ice in the wetlands, first ice. A firey flamefull light from the sun in the quick running brook. It is a day of preparation, for my poetry reading, in person, tonight. I am thinking deeply about gratitude, the night’s theme, and how to choose my poems around thoughts of all that I am grateful for. And how writing, and reading, poetry, is an act of gratitude. And, riding with Frank, after dark, to Weymouth, feeling as if life is truly returning to normal. I go out with my husband, twice on the weekend, and see friends and have fun. I meet, in person for the very first time, Mid Walsh, a poet I’ve been writing with in workshop for months. I am so pleased to see poet and writers friends who have come out for poetry. I am happy with the poems I’ve chosen and read according to plan. Frank and I drive home talking and talking about things we never seem to have a chance to talk about in the course of the day here at home. This is, perhaps, the sweetest time of the whole night, which has been wonderful. I feel our coupleness. Before leaving this late afternoon I started what might be, I hope will be, a new poem, but there is just an inkling so far.
