My life

in the leaves and on water

~ Excerpt from Paean to Place by Lorine Niedecker

Up with Frank who is soon out the door. I am sore. But Charlie and I go out for our walk. With Wave. I tell him about the huge puddles on the trails that we must cross. We put on our rain boots and go out and wade through them next to the river and brook; the water so high for July! Ah, last day of July. Oh no, goodbye July! I have loved every day of this fine buggy rainy sunny hot cool month. At the brook Charlie swims, then shakes himself onto Wave who is not in the mood to be splattered with brook water. It’s Monday morning. We retreat. I leave him with his mom and take Charlie over the trestle bridge, under the blue sky and into the flower filled meadow. A monarch! It’s such a cool and sun happy morning. I have finished another draft of the craft article and will give it a last look before sending it off tomorrow. Worked on a new poem for workshop tonight. In the late afternoon the girls and Wave and I to the pond where I swam a mile and my youngest swam three! Yee Gods, she’s a swimmer! I made a lovely dinner for all and went to my poetry workshop with my new poem and got helpful feedback. A light evening rain; saved me from having to water the vegetables.
