#NewThisDay Writing From My Photo Stream

Rocky Narrows Wetlands

Last day of July and the weather pivots. Lay day of July and I find that my favorite month was indeed long enough, just enough, after all. July has filled me up with July and made me ready for August that starts tomorrow. Low clouds and showers. I work on the new poem from the picture and find a better ending. By end of day, find what seems to be a good ending. Wave is gone, so my daughter and I talk about a swim. But the rain. I fear going for an open swim in the pond in case there is thunder. We decide on a shared walk, but the rain stops and we decide it will be walk to Farm Pond and swim. We wear our wet shoes as I know the beaver has flooded the trail and we will go through it. I tell her as we walk through the woods where Native Americans for centuries lived about my trip to Athol yesterday to see the “Indian Crossing” at the Miller’s River, why I went, and what happened. I tell her about the history I’m reading and the poem I hope to be writing. And we are walking on the trail as I tell and then we get to the swamp that has spread wide over the trail and walk through it, and then I slip and fall when the earth beneath my feet is broken, and I’m down in water up to my waist, but get right up and continue talking about Weetamoo and Mary Rowlandson and crossing the Miller’s River in winter on rafts, and my daughter is rapt, listening, and then she is telling me a big dream she had last night and I am listening, rapt, and the morning is so exciting and satisfying exploring these ideas. And then we are at the pond, still talking, and we just go in and swim to the island and back. No rain or thunder. Put our wet shoes back on, walk home. It’s quite a great time. We miss Wave, but still. We had this time. I have a client. Then my dear friend comes over for tea and we sit on the balcony and the air cools considerably. No need for air conditioning. My youngest comes over and my two daughters and Frank and I have dinner. Very nice, before I go to the webinar on revision with Sean Singer. Lots of takeaways, ideas I will wake up and apply to poems I’m working on. A handful of ripe cherry tomatoes I picked tonight from the garden on the salad.
