#NewThisDay Writing From My Photo Stream

Yes, that is a firetruck on our driveway, and there are firemen in our driveway. I will start at the beginning. I woke up at 6:00 a.m., our final morning at the lake. Loveliness. Time to pack. Soon enough, everyone is up and by 9:00 we are finally ready to drive home. Bagels at our new favorite spot as we head home. Easy drive. Home by 12:30. By 2:00 the car is unpacked, the food put away, the laundry started. . . Perri and I are upstairs, each of us closing our eyes for a catnap. Frank is at his desk on a Zoom downstairs. Suddenly he is yelling at me: Kelly, Call 911! Well, my heart dropped. I had no idea what kind of emergencyy we could be having! I grabbed my phone and ran downstairs. As soon as I was in the driveway they picked up. The Amazon delivery van in our driveway was on fire. Flames shooting out of the hood of the large van, and Frank standing with the garden hose, spraying and spraying. Getting the fire out so it wouldn’t reach the trees or the house. Wave and Perri came down. Wave, of course, thought it was cool. The Amazon driver pulled his packages out of the back of the van. Apparently he didn’t speak much English. So Frank spoke to all the fire fighters who showed up. One of them let Wave check out the fire truck. Once again, Frank to the rescue. The firefighters called Amazon who sent a tow for the burned van. I was so relieved, of course. Turns out it was a package being delivered, safe and sound despite everything, that I bought for my brother’s birthday. Frank was sitting on his Zoom when the van went by his window and he saw smoke. His zoom call continued while he fought the fire, of course. After that excitement, I met Franci at Farm Pond for a swim to the island in the late afternoon sun. Hardly anyone there. The buoys are down. So quiet. The light has changed. I felt it right away in the mid afternoon. I felt it so dramatically, and a little bit of melancholy. The passing of the summer. A quiet dinner with Frank at home. We’re beat. Wave gone. That was the bit of melancholy too. But full of gratitude that the fire was quickly under control and that Frank was here and quickly able to put it out!
