#NewThisDay Writing From My Photo Stream

January Snow

Black ice on the driveway, snow beginning to fall. I drive to the track and have a lovely five-mile walk as snow comes snowly drifting down. Some. birds in the trees letting it settle on their wings in stillness on the branches. Home to keep working on the new poem. Spend a good part of the day on it. Trying to get something, the shape of it, something poetic down. Trying to find the poetry of the poem. I keep fussing and fussing, thinking, exploring and fussing. Get ready to give up. Find something finally, a thread that pulls it together. Begins to become a poem I’m wanting. It needs work, but it has a shape. It’s a draft. I put it down and make a turkey chili and cornbread. The football is on. Frank’s watching. My son comes, my youngest comes, we have a casual meal, the guys in front of the tv on the game. I’m relieved to have found the inklings of the poem. One more that I have in draft, and then the last one needs a road trip to the western part of the state. We play Candy Land and Trouble, me, Frank, Franci, Wave, and he only wants to play if we let him cheat. Then he and I have a lively play of dinosaurs before bed. My friend calls from California, she’s walking on a beach and we talk as I watch the heavy snow falling down in the outdoor spotlight. The weight of the world. Worries and concerns and hopes. She is coming soon to visit. In the time of the valentine.
