Wake at 6:00 am to all the pleasant, local weather. The lush tropical foliage. We have coffee and then I walk to my favorite beaches, first, crossing Playa Pelada. The waves are big. People are walking and the sun is hot. Walk a long way, crossing to Playa Guiones. Watching the surfers, listening to my podcast, the NYTimes, a feature on Neanderthals. Fascinating. Ahhhhh. Of course I am thinking about famiily back home and all the hard weather on so many, but I am here and I am enjoying this respite. There is no escaping the news, because I choose not to ignore it. Another protester murdered. More lies about the real facts. Franci and Will send the family a text. They are grieving the brutalities and lighting a candle an hour each day in support of those threatened and brutalized and persecuted by ICE. After sunset, my swim in the ocean as the sun dropped into it, I bought a candle and Frank and I lit it at our casual dinner and left it burning for the hour Franci and Will suggested. Solemnly. I had a day of reading and napping, walking and swimming. And I drafted a new poem for the manuscript. I’m not sure about it. But I will bring it to workshop.
