#NewThisDay Writing From My Photo Stream

Geese and goslings in the rain

Rainy Memorial Day weekend, and home all day except for an errand. Frank took the early hour with Chippie and then I took him to the river in a light rain. The heron and the geese were out with the goslings. No sign of beaver. The woodpecker silenced. It was peaceful and I looked over all the yard work Frank got done yesterday. The brook is full of rain. I thought I would have time to write today, but after my swim my daughter and I had things to do for the wedding and we spent a good amount of time on that and that felt so good to get these things accomplished. In the afternoon I took a nap and woke up three hours later! Yikes! I was shocked. The house was quiet. They had eaten a casual dinner that my daughter cooked, and I thought I was in some kind of altered universe. It was very hard to wake up. I made myself an omelette. I am proud of myself for how I handled a scam yesterday on the drive to NTC. Long story short, someone called me to say they had made an error and sent me $1,000.00 via Zelle. I hung up immediately—it was masked as a local number—and looked at my account. Yes, the money from Zelle was there. But I called my bank and got through to fraud. The caller kept calling me and I didn’t pick up. Then he started texting me, increasingly demanding, to send the money back. I ignored him. Fraud department didn’t believe it was a scam, but I insisted they handle sending the money back. The scammer texted me “This is my hard earned money.” I texted him once to say I had contacted my bank’s fraud department and blocked him. This morning I googled Zelle fraud and yes, it’s a scam. Not entirely clear how it works, but it’s a scam. Very manipulative and I could hear myself thinking all the thoughts he was manipulating me to feel, including urgency to act, trying to make ME feel guilty for taking his money, etc. etc., feeling sorry for. him on a holiday weekend creating anxiety about the error, etc. But I know I handled it well. So incredibly irritating. Anyway, the other issue was that the money is pending in my account. It’s not even truly in there until Tues., May 26. So he was trying to get me to send him money that wasn’t even in my account. So, seeing those goslings and the two geese families peacefully on the river was a very nice antidote to fraud. And I have found two milkweed colonies springing up in addition to my mail colony gone wild. Happiness.
