Beaver Moon over Evergreen
Here on earth it is November. It gets late earlier now. Day routs the shadows and night gathers them back in with broad black-feathered wings. The Beaver Moon glows, reminding us that its longevity is not ours to know. But in secret heated moments we can feel the throb of our aliveness, sensing the aliveness that came before and will come after, the hushed mingling of souls, marking the heart that tries and tries to speak our ageless and ongoing bewilderment.
~ Nina MacLaughlin, Excerpt from Beaver Moon, Paris Review
On the way home from Wave’s gymnastics it’s 4:30 p.m., the sun is setting, the sky is pink, the moon is gigantic. It’s full at 5:00 a.m. tomorrow, Perri says. In the driveway she drops me and Wave off so we can take the long walk except it’s a run. First he’s on my back, and then on the ground, in bare feet, fleet as a white-tailed deer and leaves me behind. Ah, I knew this day would come. Franci is behind us, arriving in her car. She has come for dinner. There above the evergreens of the yard is the moon of our home. Inside, Frank has made dinner and we are almost ready to sit down. Wave wants a casual dinner, but we insist on the table. He eats quickly and is let go. He calls us to the living room couch for casual dessert––our compromise. We must hurry and all come. And we do. We are forgiven. This morning I was up early to get poems ready to send. Wave requested open faced cheese sandwich, melted cheese. So he gets his wish. Then my poems are sent and I am off to the pool for a swim. A good swim, and then a chat with my dear friend, also there to swim in the changing room. Workshop went well. My manuscript is having a good healthy and happy week. I’m feeling positive and bringing enthusiasm to my poems. Hopefulness. Tomorrow I have four groups, my busy day. Ending one, starting one. Cycles of life. Cycles of moon. All the way home in the car we talk the cycles of moon. The moon as pizza, eaten in slices, the passing weeks. The pizza of the sky tonight is whole and cheesy and stunningly good.
