King Philip’s Overlook

A morning I’ve been waiting for. Wave, I ask, do you want to go for a hike? Yes! Right away, yes. He has not been in the mood lately. Today he’s all in, and so am I. First, we break some dead branches off. This is play for us. Then we hike to King Philip’s Overlook. We go up the steepest hill. We are imagining that Charlie Angel and Brittany Angel are with us. Brittany has to be carried up the steep hill, by Wave. But Charlie makes his own way, and so do we. Then he wants to go down the steep hill. And back up. Then he wants a piggy back. Then we get to the overlook and we play house. We make hot chocolate in the fireplace and then sleep on some soft patches of moss. Then we hike down the rocks, and back up. Then I must let him ride on my back as we head home, quite happy. At the wetlands I show him the spectacle of red berries, bright and plentiful, and the birds flitting to and from the branches eating their fill. I work on some poems, get my newsletter sent. In the afternoon we go to a gathering to wish a friend a happy birthday. Dinner here with my son in front of the fire. then Wave home from a friend gathering with his mom. He has a new toy, a belated birthday present. Aren’t those the best? They are airplanes that fly on air currents. We go out into the yard and fly them around in the damp air and the wet grass after dark. We laugh and run and play. This is a wonderful Sunday.
