Heron over the Charles
I let Frank sleep in. I know he’s tired. So I take Chippie early to the Charles, drink my coffee by the water, listening to birds, thinking peaceful thoughts. And I figure something out about the beavers. I have a hunch. I take Chippie and move to the next landing where they have been working. There’s a huge tree limb that fell during the winter across this grassy landing. And there is a huge tree down on the river, half-submerged. And directly across from these two trees at this shore is the hut they’ve been building like a dome of thin sticks When I get there, the beaver leaves a grassy edge and slaps the water at us. The beaver has been gnawing on the downed limb, has broken off parts of it, and there are signs of teeth and thin trees cut to build the dome. Yup, I’m right. These three beaver have a plan. They plan to dam the river all the way across from this spot! They are taking advantage of the downed and submerged trees, capitalizing on this big limb. Oh, they have a plan. A plan that will be thwarted, eventually, I am sure by the powers that be that control the river’s flow. But it’s fun to watch them at work, so so smart and powerful. I told Frank and he came out with me later and saw it clearly too and was surprised. Chippie is a fun project for me and Frank. I had my swim. I had mother’s day wishes and hugs. Got my weekly prompt written and sent. Made some poetry submissions. Frank and I went and watched Wave’s soccer just as we’ve watched our own three kids play on this field. A bit of sun. But my allergy to pollen, recent, is really flaring today. Made me a bit grumbly, I guess I”m overtired. What I asked for was to take Chippie on his inaugural boat ride, and two of my kids came onto the river with Chippie and Frank steered us in his little motorized boat and it was lovely. Herons and turtles and apple blossoms. But Chippie was nervous and unsettled and didn’t know yet what this was all about. He’ll fall in love with it, just as Flash and Suzi and Charlie, and won’t want to be left behind. A happy mother’s day for me. Always is with my wonderful family.
