#NewThisDay Writing From My Photo Stream
Excerpt from “The Fish,” Elizabeth Bishop
I want to be completely aware how much it is summery and June is summer and should be fully appreciated as such. Because I want to be in it as it lasts. Today was so summer. I tried to get Chippie to help me do some weeding, but he didn’t care for it. Got as much done as I could. Got a lot done at my desk and also errands and busy all day, but feeling of accomplishment. And the magnolia bush in my side garden has the MOST delicious blooms. And the rabbits have not yet ravaged anything. No sign of a groundhog. The deer are minding their business elsewhere. The heron is enjoying the river of its habitat. Passing the brook this morning I saw the fleet of new brown ducklings paddling around very quietly, with no Mr. and Mrs. Mallard in sight! All on their own while their parents were away. Chippie didn’t spot them, but even if he did he won’t swim yet, only wades. He doesn’t yet know what a big swimmer he’ll be in this lab’s life. Tonight, Frank on his court with doubles tennis as he has been doing most nights and it’s delightful to see him out there playing. Got my swim in, of course. And bought plants for the pots. First plants purchased this season. Chippie will probably keep me from planting as much as usual this season. It’s okay. He’s such a nice addition to the family.
