#NewThisDay Writing From My Photo Stream
Wave has the most delicious, infectious laugh and I’ve been hearing it all week. I woke early and prepped for a memoir coaching session later in the day. Then we rode our bikes into Edgartown for coffee which my daughters like to do. Bought a birthday present in the bookstore for my grandniece. Wave helped us pick it out. Free in the early afternoon, Wave, Perri, Frank and I drove out onto Chappie for the beach, but I napped. Did I not get enough sleep last night? Somehow I was too tired to swim! I think this has been a very active vacation and needing an afternoon of rest is okay. But the day flew by crazy fast. Biking alone for bit this morning after the ride to Edgartown I listened to the interview on the Atlantic podcast of Bill Gates about his serious concerns about AI. It was pretty anxiety producing and what I so strongly felt is that paying attention to what it means to be human right now is the most important thing. As a creative writer, it’s also the most important thing. In line tonight for donuts out the back door which you can buy fresh and hot in the sweet night air, a man in his thirties was standing in line in front of us. He overheard me ask Frank if he thought the donuts we werre about to order would still be warm. The young man said, yes, there’s a very good chance they will be. In fact when he was a child and came to buy some at night he said they used to ask for “whatever you have that’s warm, and they’d get a bag full. I could sense that he had walked over from his cottage in what’s called the Campground of Oak Bluffs because he wanted to relive the special memories from his childhood. He wanted that warmth, to rekindle it. For the pure emotional pleasure of it. That’s what it means to be human. To feel things. To have memories that make us want to feel them again. Wave’s laughter from the far back seat of my car where he likes to ride, riding next to his mother back through Oak Bluffs under the moon to Edgartown. His human, playful, contagious laugh infecting us all, making us all feel his joy, and our own. Under this fabulous moon that we can see with our human eyes. And be grateful for in our human hearts.
